Read Chapter 1
Write in your journal. Answer the following questions using complete third grade sentences.
1. What kind of books do you think Jack and Annie will find in the tree house?
2. What would you do if you found a tree house in the woods?
3. Is Frog Creek, Pennsylvania a real place? Look for Frog Creek at the U.S. Postal Service webpage.
Find Pennsylvania on the map of the United States. Find Wisconsin on the map. Click here for a U.S. map. Label both states on the map in your journal. Color Pennsylvania blue and color Wisconsin green. Please make sure not to use markers. You may use crayons or color pencils.

Now it's time to read Chapters 2 and 3
Now that you have read chapters 2 and 3, you are ready to do some fun journal work. Using the Internet, find five facts about Mount Vesuvius and 5 facts about Pompeii that you never knew. Make sure to write them in your journal under the correct sections.
You will also need to find one picture of a Greek or Roman forum and save it to your H: drive. Use the check box in your journal to remind yourself that you did this.
Answer the question in your journal about what Jack and Annie may have seen in a traditional forum.

It is time to read chapters 4, 5, and 6
Now that you have met gladiators, soothsayers, and visited many places in Pompeii with Jack and Annie, you need to do some more journal work. You will need to find the definitions of the following words using the Internet: papyrus, sundial, forum, scroll, reed, gladiator, Latin, soothsayer. Make sure to write the definitions in your journal on the correct page.

Jack and Annie experienced the start of a huge volcanic eruption. Now you will need to do more research on volcanoes and eruptions.
Click on the volcano below to visit the site where you will do the following:
1. visit the virtual volcano section in the blue bar to the left. Then, in your journal, draw a picture of a volcano and show what it looks like inside, using the site for help.
2. watch the video under the section on the right of the page called, "Meet the Lava Junkies."
3. take the "Could you survive?" quiz in the blue section to the left.

With the end of the book here, you get to have some fun by watching another video and then finishing your journal with a few activities.

Where do you think the book would take you? What kind of adventures would you have? Write your answers using complete third grade sentences.
